Tzatziki sauce has a permanent place in my fridge — tangy, herby, and so easy to whip up, it goes with everything from wraps to kebabs.

Tzatziki sauce is one of my favorite Mediterranean staples — cool, creamy, and packed with flavor from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and fresh herbs. This homemade version is not only easy to make, but it’s also incredibly versatile. I use it on everything from chicken wraps to kofta kebabs, and, of course, as a go-to dip for veggies or pita bread.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the steps to make a fresh, tangy tzatziki sauce that’s just as good (if not better!) than what you’d find in a Greek taverna. Let’s dive in and make your new favorite sauce!

Ingredients for Tzatziki Sauce

Tazziki sauce recipe ingredients

  • Cucumber: Fresh cucumber, peeled, deseeded, and finely diced, adds a cool and refreshing crunch to the sauce.

  • Sea Salt: Helps draw out excess moisture from the cucumber and enhances the overall flavor.

  • Garlic Cloves: 4 to 5 cloves of garlic, finely minced or grated, bring a bold, aromatic kick to the sauce.

  • Fresh Dill: Finely chopped dill gives the tzatziki its classic herbal freshness.

  • Lemon Juice: Adds brightness and balances the creaminess of the yogurt with a tangy finish.

  • Greek Yogurt: Thick, creamy Greek yogurt is the base of the sauce, offering tang, richness, and a smooth texture.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A drizzle of high-quality olive oil adds body, richness, and a subtle fruity note.

  • Ground White Pepper (Optional): A pinch adds mild heat and depth without overpowering the other flavors.

Tips for Perfecting Your Sauce

Achieving the ideal tzatziki texture and flavor involves a few key steps:

  • Dicing Cucumber for Crunch: Instead of grating the cucumber, consider dicing it for a delightful crunch. Let the diced cucumber rest on a paper towel in a colander to reduce excess moisture. Be gentle to preserve the crunch.
  • Mincing Garlic for Flavor Boost: For a flavor boost, mince garlic into a paste with a sprinkle of salt and a mortar. This infuses your tzatziki with a potent garlic aroma that elevates the sauce’s taste.
  • Enhancing Creaminess with Greek Yogurt: Create a perfectly creamy tzatziki sauce by blending Greek yogurt into the garlic paste before whisking. This enhances the sauce’s creaminess and infuses it with robust garlic flavor.
  • Chill Time for Flavor Fusion: After preparing your sauce, refrigerate it for at least an hour before serving. This resting period allows the flavors to meld together, resulting in a harmonious and creamy tzatziki sauce.

Creative Uses for Tzatziki Sauce

Wondering how to enjoy tzatziki sauce? Here are some versatile suggestions:

  • Mezze Platter: Pair tzatziki with pita bread and fresh veggies for a delightful mezze platter.
  • Gyros and Souvlaki: A key ingredient in Greek gyros and souvlaki.
  • Salad Dressing: Use thinned-out tzatziki as a tangy salad dressing.
  • Dipping Sauce: Perfect for veggies, breadsticks, pita chips, and fried foods.
  • Side Dish: Serve alongside grilled or roasted meats, such as chicken or lamb.
  • Flavorful Enhancements: Drizzle tzatziki on chicken over rice, shawarma-spiced lamb salad, falafel, wraps, Lebanese kibbeh, roasted cabbage, and stuffed Portobello mushrooms to elevate your dishes with Mediterranean wonders.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.

Prep the Cucumber

Peel the cucumber, then finely dice or grate it. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and stir to combine. Transfer the salted cucumber onto a paper towel or clean kitchen towel set over a strainer or bowl. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to release excess water.

After resting, gather the towel and gently squeeze out as much moisture as possible. This step is essential to keep your tzatziki thick, not watery.

2.

Make the Garlic Paste & Whisk the Yogurt

While the cucumber is draining, prepare the garlic paste by combining finely minced or grated garlic with a pinch of salt. Use the flat side of your knife or a spoon to mash it into a smooth paste — this mellows the sharpness and blends more evenly into the yogurt.

In a mixing bowl, add the Greek yogurt and whisk it vigorously for 1–2 minutes using a whisk or hand mixer. This helps lighten the texture, making the tzatziki extra smooth and creamy.

3.

Combine the Ingredients

Add the garlic paste, lemon juice, finely chopped fresh dill, finely chopped fresh mint, and the squeezed cucumber to the bowl of whipped yogurt.

Stir well until all the ingredients are fully combined and the tzatziki is smooth, creamy, and flecked with herbs.

4.

Chill and Serve

Before serving, chill the tzatziki sauce in the refrigerator for 1–2 hours to let the flavors fully develop and the texture thicken. Once it's nicely chilled, serve it with warm pita bread, fresh veggies, or as a creamy, tangy sauce for gyros, grilled meats, or grain bowls.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

Storage Tip:

Store leftover tzatziki in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days. It may separate slightly — just give it a quick stir before serving. If the sauce develops an off smell, sour taste, or watery texture with discoloration, it’s best to discard it.
