Basmati rice is a staple of Yemeni cuisine. This fragrant recipe, infused with the warm spices of cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and saffron, is a delicious example of the rich and complex flavors typical of Yemeni dishes yet simple to make.

Rice is a staple worldwide, and one of my favorites is basmati rice. This type of long-grain rice is simple yet aromatic and flavorful, bringing rich texture and vibrance to any plate. It is also incredibly versatile and can be served with many meat or vegetarian dishes.

One common mistake I frequently see people make while cooking basmati rice is to pour the grains into regular water and cook it without any enhancements or flavoring. While you can do this, you’re missing out on something incredible. If you want to embrace the tastes of Yemen and enjoy the highest-caliber basmati rice, you must try this recipe. I make saffron water and traditional spices to bring out the best in the rice. Once you prepare this recipe for the first time, you’ll never cook basmati rice the same way again!

What is Basmati Rice?

Basmati rice is a special variety of long-grain rice typically grown in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. It is also trendy throughout Middle Eastern countries and popular in traditional Persian dishes. The aromatic rice provides rich but subtle flavoring that pairs well with herbs and spices common in Mediterranean and Eastern dishes. To prepare the rice, always wash it a few times before cooking. This removes extra starch and brings out the best in its rich flavors.

What is Saffron Water?

Saffron is among the most legendary spices. It’s bold red coloring easily recognizes it, and the yellow hue it infuses into water. It is a highly fragrant spice offering sweet, luxurious flavoring. Adding saffron strands to water creates a subtly powerful taste experience that enhances the basmati rice and takes it to an exciting new level. Moreover, saffron is an antioxidant believed to improve mood, protect brain cells, manage appetite, and reduce inflammation.

What are Some Useful Tips for Preparing Saffron Water?

I am always cautious when working with saffron. Not only is it delicate, but it’s also very precious and expensive. Fortunately, you don’t need much saffron to create an exotic aromatic quality. I follow the cold bloom technique for this recipe to extract the flavor fully. With no heat, tear the saffron thread slightly with a mortar and pestle before transferring it into a small jar. Next, add a couple of ice cubes on top before adding 1/8 cup of room temperature water to allow the ice to melt. Then you let the magic happen for about 20 minutes before straining and using the golden liquid for your recipe.

How Should I Serve Yemeni Style Basmati Rice?

Yemeni-style Basmati rice is a delicious, versatile side dish that pairs well with various main courses. It’s perfect with oven-roasted chicken seasoned with sumac, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, and kabab kofta with tahini. If you’re looking for lighter fare, it also pairs well with simple salads like creamy yogurt, cucumber salad, fatoush salad, or Greek salad. Whether serving it alongside a meat dish or as part of a, this flavorful rice will surely make a vegetarian meal a hit.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

Can I Store Yemeni Style Basmati Rice?

Although Yemeni-style basmati rice is fantastic when served hot and fresh, you can prepare it for a few hours before serving it later. The best way to do this so to keep it in the same pot it was prepared in and cover it with a lid and a heavy kitchen towel or blanket. This will keep the heat and moisture in. My grandmother and mother always did this, and it always worked perfectly. Although rice does not freeze well, you can also store and save any leftovers for reheating and enjoying later. Store the cooked and prepared basmati rice in an airtight container. It will keep in the fridge for several days. To keep the rice from drying out when reheating, add one or two tablespoons of water before putting it in the microwave.
